フランシス真悟による新作個展をCapsuleにて開催いたします。本展では、アーティストが長年探求してきた「光と色の現象」を核に、光の反射と吸収という二つの対極的な力学を画面上に共存させる最新シリーズを発表します。
作品に用いられている“インターフェレンス”塗料は、光の反射によって色彩が変化する特殊な絵具で、光を強く返すときはきらめくような輝きを放ち、周囲光のもとでは静かな表情へと変化します。この移ろう光の領域に取り囲まれている黒い円は、極めてマットで光を吸収する塗料によって描かれ、強い対比と緊張を生み出しています。反射と吸収という両極は、鑑賞者の視線を外側の光と色の現象へと引き寄せながら、同時に深淵のような黒の円へと誘います。
フランシスは、この絵画内部に存在する二極の力を、今日の世界が抱える現実と重ね合わせます。気候変動、パンデミック、政治・経済の不安定化、富の偏在、暗号通貨による不正取引の増加、そしてAI開発に伴う資源負荷や雇用の喪失。第二次世界大戦後の秩序を基盤としてきた社会構造は揺らぎ、世界は新たな岐路に立っています。
本展における “反射” と “吸収” の重力は、私たちが直面する選択のメタファーでもあります。恐れによる分断と利己的な生存戦略へと向かうのか、あるいは他者への思いやりと共生を基盤とする社会を志向するのか。フランシスの絵画は、その選択を静かに、しかし強い力をもって鑑賞者に問いかけます。

フランシス真悟　
1969年カリフォルニア州サンタモニカ生まれ。ロサンゼルスと鎌倉を拠点に活動。フランシスは、絵画における空間の広がりや精神性を探求し続けているアーティストです。代表作として、幾層にも重ねられたブルーの抽象画や、深い色彩のモノクローム作品の他、特殊な素材を使用し観る角度によってさまざまな光と色彩が立ち現れるペインティング「Interference」シリーズが知られています。DIC川村記念美術館（千葉、2012年）、ダースト財団（ニューヨーク、2013年）、市原湖畔美術館（千葉、2017年）、セゾン現代美術館(長野、2018年)、マーティン美術館 (テキサス、2019年)、 銀座メゾンエルメスフォーラム（東京、2023年)、茅ヶ崎市美術館（神奈川、2024年)など 国内外の多数の個展、グループ展に参加。JPモーガン・チェース・アートコレクション、スペイン銀行、 フレデリック・R・ワイズマン財団、森アートコレクション、セゾン美術館、茅ヶ崎市美術館、桶田コレクション、植島コレクション、東京アメリカンクラブなどにコレクションとして収蔵。

Capsule is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by Shingo Francis. The exhibition features his latest works exploring the phenomena of light and color, brought to life through a dynamic interplay between reflection and absorption.

In these works, Francis employs “interference” paint—materials that shift in color depending on the angle and intensity of reflected light. When illuminated directly, the surface radiates with brilliant luminosity; under ambient light, it becomes restrained and subtle. Encircling this shifting field is a deep black circle rendered with an extremely matte, light-absorbing paint. The stark contrast between the reflective outer area and the absorptive black circle creates a powerful tension, pulling the viewer simultaneously outward toward the vivid light phenomenon and inward into the depth of the void-like center.
Francis reflects on the polar gravity as a metaphor for the challenges confronting individuals and societies today. Climate change, the Covid pandemic, political instability, economic uncertainty, widening inequality, the misuse of cryptocurrencies, and the environmental and social impacts of Artificial Intelligence all signal profound disruptions to the post–World War II world order. Humanity now faces a new crossroads, accelerating toward an uncertain future.

The gravitational pull between reflection and absorption within these paintings mirrors our own choices: whether to move toward a compassionate, communal future where the needs of many are upheld, or to retreat into fear-driven individualism, selfishness, and greed. Through these works, Francis invites viewers to contemplate this critical tension—one that defines not only the canvas before us, but the world we inhabit.

Shingo Francis
Born 1969 in Santa Monica, California. Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA and Kamakura, Japan. Francis explores the vast space and spirituality of painting through abstract expressions. His blue abstract paintings with multiple layers, and deep monochrome color works, as well as the "Interference" series, which changes color depending on the reflection of light, are his most well-known works. Major exhibitions include DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art,(Chiba, 2012), The Durst Organization (New York, 2013), Ichihara Lakeside Museum, (Chiba, 2017), Sezon Museum of Modern Art, (Nagano, 2018), Martin Museum of Art, (Texas, 2019).
